Winter is here, and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing. Frozen pipes are more than just an inconvenience—they can lead to costly repairs if they burst. Here’s how to protect your pipes and what to do if they’ve already frozen.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
- Insulate Exposed Pipes
Pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, or garages are most vulnerable. Use foam pipe insulation or heat tape to keep them warm. - Keep a Consistent Temperature
Even if you’re away, keep your thermostat set to at least 12-15°C (54-59°F). This prevents extreme temperature drops inside your home. - Drip Faucets During Extreme Cold
Allow a slow trickle of water to run from faucets connected to vulnerable pipes. Moving water is less likely to freeze. - Seal Drafty Areas
Check for gaps around doors, windows, and pipes entering your home. Seal them with caulk or weatherstripping to block cold air. - Shut Off and Drain Outdoor Water Lines
Disconnect hoses and turn off the water supply to outdoor spigots. Drain any remaining water to avoid ice buildup.
What to Do If Your Pipes Freeze
- Locate the Frozen Section
Check for visible frost on the pipe or a lack of water flow from specific faucets. - Thaw Safely
- Use a hairdryer or portable space heater to warm the pipe, starting from the faucet and moving toward the frozen area.
- Never use an open flame—it’s a fire hazard.
- Open the Faucet
Let cold water run to help thaw the pipe and relieve pressure. - Call a Professional
If you can’t locate or thaw the frozen section, or if a pipe bursts, contact a plumber immediately.
Why Prevention Matters
Repairing burst pipes can cost thousands of dollars—not to mention the potential damage to your walls, floors, and belongings. A little preparation goes a long way toward protecting your home and wallet this winter.
